1. Mawu Oyamba
The APEX Domus 4 Anti-Decubitus Mattress with Compressor is designed to provide effective pressure redistribution and relief for patients at high risk of developing pressure ulcers, or for the treatment of existing pressure ulcers up to Grade IV. This system aims to improve patient comfort and quality of life by preventing and managing skin breakdown associated with prolonged bed rest.
This manual provides essential information for the proper setup, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your Domus 4 system. Please read it thoroughly before use to ensure safe and effective operation.
2. Zofunika Zachitetezo
Always follow basic safety precautions when using electrical products, especially when children are present. To reduce the risk of electrocution, burns, fire, or injury to persons:
- Read all instructions before using the mattress system.
- Do not operate the compressor if it has a damaged cord or plug, if it is not working properly, or if it has been dropped or damaged.
- Sungani chingwecho kutali ndi malo otentha.
- Musatseke mipata ya mpweya kapena kuiyika pamalo ofewa pomwe mipata ingatseke.
- Osagwiritsa ntchito panja kapena kugwirira ntchito komwe aerosol (spray) akugwiritsidwa ntchito kapena komwe akuponyedwa mpweya.
- Ensure the mattress is placed on a stable, flat bed frame.
- Regularly inspect the mattress and compressor for any signs of wear or damage.
- Consult a healthcare professional for appropriate patient positioning and care.
3. Zigawo Zamakina
The APEX Domus 4 system consists of the following main components:
- Alternating Pressure Mattress: Composed of individual air cells that inflate and deflate in an alternating pattern to redistribute pressure.
- Compressor Unit: The pump that inflates and deflates the air cells, controlling the pressure and cycle time.
- Antimicrobial Cover: A protective, vapor-permeable, water-resistant, and flame-retardant cover for the mattress.
- Mitundu ya Air Hoses: Connect the compressor to the mattress.
- CPR Valve: A quick-release valve for rapid deflation in emergency situations.
- Transport Plug: Used to maintain air in the mattress during patient transport or power outages.

4. Malangizo Kukhazikitsa
Follow these steps to set up your APEX Domus 4 Anti-Decubitus Mattress system:
- Konzani Pakhomo la Bedi: Place the mattress on a standard bed frame. Ensure the bed frame is clean and free of sharp objects that could damage the mattress.
- Tsegulani matiresi: Carefully unroll the mattress on the bed frame with the air cell side facing up. Ensure the air hoses are positioned towards the foot end of the bed.
- Secure the Mattress: Use the adjustment straps located on the underside of the mattress to secure it to the bed frame, preventing slippage.
- Connect the Compressor: Hang the compressor unit securely at the foot end of the bed using its integrated hangers.
- Gwirizanitsani Mapaipi a Air: Connect the air hoses from the mattress to the air outlets on the compressor unit. Ensure a secure and tight connection.

Figure 4.1: Demonstrates connecting the air hoses from the mattress to the compressor unit.
- Plug in the Compressor: Plug the compressor's power cord into a grounded electrical outlet (AC 220-240V, 50 Hz).
- Kukwera Mtengo Koyamba: Turn on the compressor using the On/Off button. The mattress will begin to inflate. Allow approximately 20-30 minutes for the mattress to fully inflate and stabilize before placing a patient on it.
5. Malangizo Ogwiritsira Ntchito
5.1. Control gulu Overview
The compressor unit features a control panel for adjusting settings and monitoring system status. Refer to the labels on your specific unit for exact button functions.
5.2. Kusintha kwa Mavuto
Adjust the pressure setting based on the patient's weight. The compressor allows for pressure range adjustment for patients weighing between 40 kg and 200 kg. Use the pressure adjustment dial or buttons on the compressor to select the appropriate setting for optimal pressure redistribution.
5.3. Therapy Modes
The Domus 4 offers three therapy modes:
- Alternating Pressure Mode: This is the primary mode, where air cells inflate and deflate in an alternating cycle (typically 10 minutes) to continuously redistribute pressure and stimulate blood flow.
- Static Mode: In this mode, all air cells remain inflated to a constant pressure, providing a firm, stable surface. This mode is useful for patient transfers or when a stable surface is temporarily required.
- Anti-Shearing Mode: This mode helps reduce shearing forces on the patient's skin, often by slightly reducing pressure in certain areas or adjusting cell inflation patterns.
5.4. Ntchito Zapadera
- Max Firm: This function inflates all cells to maximum firmness, useful for patient care activities like dressing changes or transfers.
- Panel Lock: Activates a lock function on the control panel to prevent accidental changes to settings.
- Mayendedwe: When the compressor is disconnected, the mattress can maintain air for a period using the transport plug. Insert the transport plug into the air hose connection point on the mattress to seal the air within the cells.

Figure 5.1: The transport plug, used to seal air within the mattress cells for patient transport or power outages.
- Ntchito ya CPR: In an emergency requiring CPR, pull the red CPR valve to rapidly deflate the mattress, providing a firm surface for resuscitation.

6. Kusamalira ndi Kusamalira
6.1. Cleaning the Mattress Cover
The mattress cover is designed for easy cleaning. It can be machine washed. Follow these guidelines:
- Remove the cover from the mattress.
- Machine wash according to the care label instructions (typically gentle cycle with mild detergent).
- Osathira zotuwitsa.
- Air dry or tumble dry on low heat. Ensure the cover is completely dry before reattaching.
6.2. Cleaning the Compressor Unit
Wipe the exterior of the compressor unit with a damp cloth and mild disinfectant. Do not immerse the unit in water or spray liquids directly onto it.
6.3. Kusungirako
If storing the system for an extended period:
- Tsitsani matiresi kwathunthu.
- Sambani zigawo zonse bwinobwino.
- Fold or roll the mattress neatly.
- Store the mattress and compressor in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
7. Mavuto
This section provides solutions to common issues you might encounter with your Domus 4 system.
| Vuto | Chifukwa Chotheka | Yankho |
|---|---|---|
| Mattress not inflating or losing air. | Air hoses not securely connected. Compressor not powered on. Leak in mattress or hoses. CPR valve open. | Ensure hoses are tightly connected. Check power cord and On/Off switch. Inspect mattress and hoses for punctures; repair if possible or contact support. Ensure CPR valve is closed. |
| Compressor making unusual noise. | Compressor unit not stable. Kuwonongeka kwamkati. | Ensure compressor is hung securely and not vibrating against a surface. If noise persists, discontinue use and contact support. |
| Alarms sounding (Low Pressure, Power Failure, System Fault). | Low pressure: Leak or patient weight exceeding capacity. Power failure: Power disconnected. System fault: Internal error. | Check for leaks, adjust pressure setting. Ensure power cord is connected. For system fault, restart unit; if alarm persists, contact support. |
| Mattress feels too firm or too soft. | Incorrect pressure setting for patient weight. | Adjust the pressure setting on the compressor unit according to the patient's weight (40-200 kg range). |
